Philippines Pedicab, Sikad-Sikad, Trisikad, by Biliran on Apr 30, 2012 22:03:28 GMT 8, Sikad-Sikad
Pedicab's in Biliran Province are called Sikad-Sikad, and you will regularly hear people call out Sikad in the streets of Naval as they try to get the attention of the drivers. The word Sikad means Kick or Pedal, so it's unclear if its meaning comes from pedalling the Bicycle or when the driver kicks the foot brake on the front wheel. The brake is one of the most interesting feature of this type of Philippines Pedicab, as its simply a foot brake on a sprung hinge over the front wheel, with a piece of car tyre used as the brake onto the rubber bicycle tyre.
Two bright yellow Pedicabs or Sikad-Sikad in www.Biliran.ph designs ready for carrying passengers around the streets of Naval.
This type of Philippine Pedicab is just found in the Biliran, Leyte, Samar region as they are mostly manufactured in the town of Carigara in Leyte Province between Biliran Island and Tacloban City. Other slight variations of this design are built locally in towns across Eastern Visayas, and its interesting to look out for the differences and extras that some Sikad have fitted.

Philippines Pedicab, Sikad-Sikad, Trisikad, by Biliran on Jun 6, 2012 20:09:55 GMT 8, Pigs love riding Pedicab's too! ;D
This is a regular sight in the Philippines as people transport their animals such as Pigs and Chickens to market. It's very common to see motorcab's with two or three Pigs hanging out of the side, and you will first notice them as you hear the animals squealing loudly as they travel down the road.

Pedicabs don't really seem to follow any of the rules of the road, so you often see them going the wrong way along one way streets or suddenly turning around on the spot as they see a new potential new passenger. As in the photo they will also ride three or even four across a street as they race to get their customers to their destination and on to search for new passengers before the other Pedicabs.

Pedicabs in the rain. Even those who like to walk start to use the Pedicabs when it starts to rain, and most of the pedicabs are prepared with extra plastic covers to help keep the passengers as dry as possible.

The main street in Naval is always very busy with lots of Pedicabs or Sikad-Sikad as people try to avoid walking in the hot sunshine and prefer to ride even for just short distances between shops along the same street.

A nice evening in Naval as the sun goes down over Biliran Province. The few hours around sunset can be the most busy times of day on the streets of Naval as children leave school and students are changing classes at Naval State University or traveling into town to buy food for dinner from the shops or market.
