The Biliran Geothermal Concession was awarded by the Philippine Department of Energy (DOE) to the consortium of FEDCO and Envent of Iceland in July 2008, and has been in an advanced stage of exploration, having completed the geological, geochemical and MT/TEM/AMT surveys in 2009. Two anomalies were identified in the area which could be the subject of the next stage exploratory and delineation drilling. Three deep and high temperature wells drilled in the 80’s confirm the existence of a high temperature resource in the island.

NAVAL, Biliran, April 9 (PIA) – The developer of the geothermal project in Biliran province has seen a big potential generating capacity of the project based on the status report of the on-going exploration drilling. Grimur Bjornsson, reservoir engineer of Orka Energy-Biliran Geothermal Incorporated, reported a “possible generating capacity of 200 megawatts” based on his report on the resource possible and proven potential. The possible generating capacity is based on a resistivity anomaly and accessibility in a rugged terrain where a production load of 10 megawatts per square kilometer assuming the more accessible North sector of 12 square kilometer and South sector is 6 square kilometer, Bjornsson stated in his report. He also reported that the current drilling campaign is expected to prove 50-100 megawatts generating potential within the next 12 months. Orka-BGI is currently drilling the third exploration well as provided in the approved provincial ordinance allowing the conduct of drilling of three exploration wells in Barangays Cabibihan and Villavicenta in Caibiran town. Meanwhile, Tohru Sugiura, chief specialist of Toshiba Corporation Power Systems Company, disclosed in an interview on Monday, April 7 during the presentation of the geothermal project to DOE Secretary Carlos Jericho Petilla at the Biliran Garden Resort in Sitio Lomboy, Brgy. Calumpang, Naval, Biliran that his firm together with another firm in-charge of the construction of the geothermal power plant, will start the construction of the power plant by July this year. It was learned that Orka Energy contracted Toshiba Corporation Power Systems Company to undertake in the construction of the geothermal power plant of the Biliran Geothermal project. Sugiara also informed that the timetable for the completion of the geothermal power plant is 24 months from July this year. (PIA 8 BIliran)

"We present the pride of the Filipinos. Energy Development Corporation has built and operated the world's largest vertically integrated geothermal facility. This corporate AVP tells the story of the birth of the geothermal titan and how it has catapulted the country into global geothermal leadership."
This is our sustainability story. Energy Development Corporation's geothermal success story is the Philippines' success story too. Back during the oil crisis in the 70s,EDC was created to explore and develop alternative indigenous energy sources. One of its most successful programs is geothermal power. Its commercial success paved the way for other renewable energy resources to be used in the country. Then and now, EDC has always led the industry in creating economic benefits to the Filipinos as it protects and enhances the environment and makes social investments work for people. This is EDC's sustainability story.

Philippines taps geothermal potential: Eco Solutions looks at how the Philippines is tapping into its geothermal potential.
Leyte is one of the islands in the Philippines where geothermal power plants were developed by Energy Development Corporation, the countries leading supplier of this kind of energy, with over 3 decades of experience. EDC is now well positioned to follow the path to a low carbon and sustainable future. Here in the rural areas of Leyte it's not just electricity that's being generated by this geothermal site. Livelihood projects involving farmers, women, out-of-school youths as well as reforestation are being financed from investments in this geothermal site. Watch more to find out how the local lives are impacted.
